MAJ - Pine Bluff-born and Dallas-based artist tempers grunge-inflected production, soulful delivery, and nocturnal hip-hop with stark vulnerability and confessional storytelling. Amassing over five million total streams within a year’s time, he quietly carved out a lane of his own. He initially escaped suburban malaise by launching a YouTube channel under the name Semaj. As he posted reaction videos, his music commentary and analysis tallied over 4 million views. Without telling anyone, he cut tracks for himself. During 2018, he shortened the previous moniker to Maj and made his first original song upload. Right out of the gate, “Leave Me Alone” racked up over 100K streams. Collaborating with producer Nick Mira [XXXTentacion, Juice WRLD], “You and I” and “Sloppy Seconds” both crossed the one-million-mark as “The Heartbreak”—produced by Nimbus Beats—neared 1.5 million plays on Soundcloud. Meanwhile, the 2019 single “Come Here” slipped from a haunting and airy beat by 1Mind & Di$ into a dark and devilish invitation, “Come here, let me take your soul.” The follow-up “Trial & Error” highlights his range as it climaxes on an unexpectedly catchy “**** my life” chant. It feels good to know Maj is there listening and, most importantly, singing.
